Are You Full Of Facts Or Full Of Something Else

Internet Marketing, writing and fact-checking makes an interesting combination; interesting at least for lack of a better term in this particular instance. Why would it be considered that way? Very simply it is quite difficult to verify much of the information that many people want to have written. While there are enough examples to fill a large tome, let us look at just a few here.

Testimonials abound on the internet about people having made thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars in only a very short time. Are they going to open up their financial records so that anyone and everyone can see? How many times have you seen those checks on sites? If you take a careful look at the first two digits of the tracking number on many of those checks, they are obviously fakes or they have been altered.
For those who do not know, the first two digits of the tracking number are used to indicate the tracking which Federal Reserve Bank will process the check. Fake checks do not prove anything other than the fact that what you are seeing is not real. For all that can be proven beyond any doubt, these people may actually be understating their incomes for personal reasons. Nobody can say for certain simply because these facts cannot be independently checked and verified.

While this particular matter may not exactly be relevant in all forms of writing with regards to Internet Marketing, it does pose an interesting question. To what extent must the writer be able to prove something before it can be accepted as an actual fact and not mere fiction based on hearsay?

As a writer, it is a good idea to verify all of your information with at least two sources and preferably three or more before it is written as fact. Yet there will still be many instances when even this much is not possible, so what other options are left for the writer who wishes to be unencumbered by fantasy and only present verifiable facts?

If a large number of people believe something to be true, that does not make it true. However, the writer can use this to explain that “Many people believe” or make some other more generalized statement that indicates it is an accepted truth even though it cannot be independently fact checked. It may seem like a very subtle difference and perhaps it is. However, for many writers it can be the difference between still having a job and having to look for work.

Whether or not your personal situation is that extreme, it is still a good idea to check out every aspect that may be examined more closely by some readers. Truth, honesty and verifiable facts in your writing will always build your credibility and will only rarely hurt despite all of the old clichés about the truth. No matter what you are writing, try and keep it real and it will help you to maintain a better following and a better income.
