Five Ways to Take a Break and Make It Pay
|
|
The next time you say, “Time for a break,” think “inspiration” instead of merely “coffee and doughnut.”
I’m not suggesting that you should give up the coffee. However, have
some inspiration with it instead of a cookie or sweet roll. As the
caffeine picks you up, the inspiration will pick up your success
potential.
Here are five simple ways to do this:
Keep a self-help book handy.
Daydream about success.
Write out your goals.
Plan your next move.
Ask “What’s the most successful thing I can do in this moment?”
A good self-help book is good on any page. In fact, who cares if you
ever read it from cover to cover? You can gain a new insight just by
opening the book and taking “pot luck.”
Why? Your mind makes meaning out of anything and relates it to your
life. For those of us truly interested in success, what better use for
this wonderful ability than a self-help book? And in the digital age,
you can accomplish the same thing with a Google search or an MP3.
Since all of us daydream anyway, the next one is a natural. Daydream
about success. Let your mind tell you a story of your own success. Do
this even if it hasn’t happened yet. In fact, do this especially if it
hasn’t happened yet!
Trust your mind to fill in the details. All you have to do is mute any
negative self-talk that says something like “This is stupid.”
“Write out your goals” does not mean a detailed essay. A word or two
and a moment’s reflection will do nicely. All you need to do is simply
remind yourself where you are going and why you are on this success
journey.
When you plan your next success move, you minimize the time delay
between inspiration and action. This is effective even if you simply
list the next three tasks you will do when you get back to your desk.
They don’t have to be earthshaking. However, you are far more likely to
do them and do them effectively if you have a plan before you get back
to your desk.
I’ve included the question “What’s the most successful thing I can do
in this moment?” to cover every other possibility. For example, if you
are overtired, frazzled, ultra-stressed, and look the cat dragged you
in, the most successful thing you can do might well be “Go home and go
to bed!”
It’s a judgment call. However, the question implies that you can
discover a successful thing to do even if it is small and seemingly
insignificant.
So challenge your mind to turn a break into something more than a buzz and empty calories.
Reach for inspiration instead of a cookie with your coffee. It’s lower in calories and higher in success.
